Published: Article on 1 Maccabees 2 and Hebrews 11

I just received the digital offprint, available here. This was a germ of an idea in a paper I submitted for an independent research class with Dr. Barry Strauss in my senior year at Cornell way back in 1991. (Yes, I had multiple senior years.) This article is part of a Festschrift in honor of Bruce Chilton, Earliest Christianity Within the Boundaries of Judaism is published by Brill and available now. The book was edited by Alan […]

We have lost our faith.

I was invited to preach at an all-campus service at the beginning of the semester. It was amazing to see the big auditorium in the student union completely filled. It was wonderful. It was incredibly encouraging. As I mention at the beginning of the sermon, I believe a preacher should be bringing the message that the congregation needs to hear and that is difficult when you are not regularly in that communion. This was a gathering of […]

iSBL – Hebrews Paper

I am looking forward to heading to Vienna this weekend for next week’s International SBL. I will be presenting in the Hebrews section. I posted a summary of my paper already, “Hebrews 11 is a Midrash of 1 Macc. 2.” To save you the trouble of clicking the link, I will cite my own summary below. The article itself should be published later this fall. Summary of the Argument Most commentators do note that 1 Macc 2, […]

International SBL – Hebrews Section

I am very pleased that my paper on 1 Macc 2 and Hebrews 11 has been accepted for International SBL this summer! It looks like a great pair of sessions on Hebrews. I also presented a draft of this paper on Tuesday at the PhD colloquium at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where I have been teaching a week long course on rabbinic exegesis. My suggestions were met with interest and some very good suggestions. More […]

Hebrews 11 is a Midrash of 1 Macc. 2

UPDATED – Excursus below. That is overstating the case and an example of really bibliogeeky link baiting. (Can we have a competition to see who has the geekiest or the worst?) But it does convey the sense of what I think is going on. As I posted earlier, I have submitted this as a proposal to the International SBL for this summer and have already completed a draft of the paper. I do not want […]

A comparison of 1 Macc. 2 and Hebrews 11 – ISBL Proposal

The International SBL is in Vienna this summer and I have just submitted my proposal to the Epistle of Hebrews session (and actually finished writing the paper!). This is something I have been thinking about for twenty years or so. It will be interesting to see what sort of response it receives (assuming it is accepted). Similarities are often noted between the final exhortation of Mattathias to his sons (1 Macc. 2:49ff) that they “remember […]
