Moving from Sente to EndNote (with screenshots)

In a previous post (Sente is (long) dead, long live EndNote?) I wrote about the fact that Sente, the bibliographic database solution I had espoused is now defunct and that I had moved over to EndNote. (And I feel horrible about that! Coincidentally a former PSU student of mine just emailed me to say that she just found out that Sente was dead, just as she was starting her doctoral research! Better now than later, […]

Sente is (long) dead, long live EndNote?

Several years ago I wrote about seeking a bibliographic software. I had been using EndNote for years, but I wanted a solution that would allow me to archive and annotate PDFs while also having access to them on the iPad. I chose the “walled garden” of Sente. It was well integrated, had server support, and required little work on my part to keep it up. The latter was in distinction from various other solutions at […]

UPDATE: Using Dropbox for Word Editing on iPad (or, living without Quickoffice and using Pages)

UPDATE 2: Now (November 2014) Microsoft has not only made Office apps available for the iPad, but they have now made them free to use once you register for a free MS account.1 Just add your Dropbox (or OneDrive) account to the account and away you go! So it has taken several years, but here you go. UPDATE: Nearly a year later and iOS 8 is out. Lots of changes including some Pages integration with Dropbox. […]

When is “Health” bad for you?

When it is an app in iOS 8 apparently. I was skeptical when I first read the title of this article: “The New Health App on Apple’s iOS 8 is Literally Dangerous.” I was ready to pass right over it and move on, but then I realized the author had an excellent point. The simple fact that Apple does not let you delete this app from your phone can be a serious problem for people who are […]

iOS 7 Keyboard Tips

I wrote over two years ago about the lack of Bluetooth keyboard support in iOS. Specifically, it just makes no sense to me that Apple should give us some key commands, but not the most basic and useful in Mail. I stumbled across an article from Tao of Mac which points out that while there are still odd limitations there are now new key commands in Safari. Safari now supports a few standard keyboard combinations: Cmd+L […]

View Unread Mail in iOS using Notifications Workaround

UPDATE: Apparently iOS 7 will allow you to view Unread messages only. As of 8/29/13 it has not yet been released, so I cannot confirm that. UPDATE 2:Indeed iOS 7 allows this. In the Mail app go to “Mailboxes” (upper left corner) and, if you don’t already see “Unread,” select “Edit” in the upper right corner. You will now be able to see “Unread” as an option but also “To or CC” allowing you to […]
