Joseph Vincent Paterno, 1926-2012

Today I was going to reflect on the fact January 22, 2012 is the one year anniversary of the passing of Mr. William Schreyer. Sadly instead we remember one of his closest friends, Coach Paterno. It is a truly sad coincidence that these two great men who transformed their respective fields and each of whom left such an indelible mark on Penn State should share this anniversary.

The circumstances of the last few months are not what anyone would have wanted, but I do not believe they will define his career and certainly not his life. Coach often said he lived a full, happy life doing what he loved best with a wonderful family and friends. He transformed the lives of thousands of young men for the better. He reminded us all to be gracious in defeat and when we are successful, to act like we have been there before and will be there again. That, I am convinced, will be his legacy.

At Mr. Schreyer’s funeral Joe said Bill was like a brother to him and that his passing marked the end of a great era. I am sure Mr. Schreyer would say the same.

This evening’s 9 pm mass in the worship hall at Pasquerilla Spiritual Center will be offered for Mr. Schreyer and I am sure Coach Paterno will be remembered as well.

“May light perpetual shine upon him.”

SacredTechs.com – a competition

Why don’t we have a bit of fun with this? Dr. Robert Cargill and I are getting ready to launch a collaboration that we think will be of interest to the Biblioblogging world and beyond. The project is called:

Sacred Techs

So here is the competition. What do you think this will be? I will give a lovely Penn State – Schreyer Honors College mug to the first person who is the most correct. Only one caveat, we will not announce the winner until we launch the project. But don’t worry! You won’t have long to wait!

A lovely SHC Mug

No duh: Drinking doesn’t help with studies

Just back from SBL and getting ready to be descended upon by 10 relatives, but I caught this in the Penn State Newswire. How would have thought that engaging in excessive use of alcohol could effect your grades?

College students who engage in binge drinking tend to earn lower grades than students who don’t abuse alcohol, according to a newly released report. The Center for the Study of Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State conducted a study that shows a clear link between alcohol abuse, mental health symptoms,
and academic performance. The study’s data illustrate a strong inverse correlation between grade-point average and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

British child trade

No, it is not illegal, that is the problem. As Australia apologizes today for its part in receiving up to 150,000 children from Britain, children who were “taken from single mothers and impoverished families in Britain,” as migrant workers Britain is doing it again. Similar practices continue to exist in Britain and there are calls for even more aggressive actions.

I realize that children have to be protected and Jim W’s Total Depravity posts all too often feature failed parents, but there must be better solutions.

The NCHC conference heats up!

j0qThis is more excitement than I really need. The situation is this, I was immersed in researching for my paper on Ezra-Nehemiah for SBL (ok, napping) when I heard all these firetrucks and sirens. Well, it is DC a big city with a lot going on in it. Then I realize I smell acrid smoke. I pay a little more attention. I look out the window. Sure enough! There are the firetrucks.

Well, no alarms in the hotel so I proceed to pack up my computer and camera and, since I had been taking the stairs for my health anyway (true!), I head down six flights. Then I meet these gentlemen headed the 10th floor. Apparently the only injury was the wifi which has since been restored.

I have better pictures from my D-SLR but I forgot to bring the card reader. I will post some tomorrow when I return home. Heh! This gives me an idea for a Halloween costume…

And in case you would like to see a few more pictures, you can find them at my flickr account.
