Government Grant to Preserve Virtual Worlds

The Library of Congress announced last week that it had awarded a two-year $590,000 grant to several institutions to help preserve online games and virtual worlds. The project, Preserving Virtual Worlds, seeks to develop archiving methods for early digital games, electronic literature, and virtual worlds. Leading the project are the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Maryland’s Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, the Rochester Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and Linden Lab, creator of the virtual world Second Life.
