Dr. Meena Bose Speaks Thursday Night

From my SHC blog:

The Centre Daily Times ran an article this morning about Dr. Bose’s speech.

Meena Bose, a renowned scholar in presidential studies, is making no more predictions in this race for the White House.

Political twists have already upended two of her best guesses — that Democrat John Edwards and Republican Mitt Romney would stay in for the long haul.

So don’t expect an overly political speech when Bose, a Penn State alumna and Hofstra University professor, returns to University Park this week to deliver a public lecture.

No, Bose said Monday, her talk here — titled “How Do We Define Democratic Leadership in the Twenty-First Century?” — will offer a more historical tone.

She said she plans to talk about the great U.S. presidents, such as Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and “what qualities we see in them that are relevant today.”

“I hope it will spark discussion about our expectations for the next president, what the next president needs to accomplish,” Bose said.

Dr. Bose is a Scholar alumna and the lecture will be Thursday night at 7 pm in the Schwab Auditorium. Don’t forget, my podcast with Dr. Bose can be heard here.

Schreyer Honors College Videos

I mentioned yesterday our new site over at the SHC, but I didn’t mention that we have new videos! There is even a blooper reel that is very amusing.

Photo: Final THON Set

Those crazy kids raised over $6.6 MILLION dollars! 46 hours straight of standing up (if not always dancing). It is an amazing thing to be a part of so we made sure to be there for the final count. I just uploaded my last set of THON pics and here is one more for this site:

THON 2008 – For the Kids

DSC07526.JPGLast night began THON 2008, the annual student dance marathon at Penn State that benefits pediatric cancer research and treatment at the Hershey Medical Center. It is the largest student philanthropy in the world, raising over $5.2M last year alone!

Thousands of Penn Staters raise funds all year long and then nearly 700 are dancing for 46 hours straight. It is an amazing experience. I will be posting a podcast with interviews later and have posted pictures at my flicker account. My other posts are therefore delayed while I cheer on my students and also see my daughter in her first little play!

If you have just done your taxes and realized that you really should have given more to charity then please head over to http://thon.org/ and donate what you can. The three teams associated with our honors college are SHC, Atlas, and Springfield, but there are many others including a Newman THON team.

UPDATE: The Podcast is now available!

Snow! (And work grumble…)

It has been snowing since about 1am. The kids are out of school and I am not. :-( But I did get to take some pictures of my office. Maybe, to make Dr. Jim West truly happy, I could take a picture of my cat in the snow.

This is the view of my office from College Ave. Yes, I am spoiled. My office even has little papal balconies. This is a picture from my balcony looking at College Ave:
