Granted, it has been more than 10 years since they have toured and that long since their last original album, Mr. Buechner’s Dream. Still, they are alive and kicking and making great music. I am very excited to be able to see them in person.

*DANIEL AMOS ON TOUR*
2011 Tour Featuring: Terry Taylor, Jerry Chamberlain, Greg Flesch, Ed McTaggart and Paul Averitt

Few bands with roots that stretch back to the 70s still create timely, relevant music. Most of them are nostalgia acts, recycling the faded glory days of yore when they were writing and performing important music. Not so with Daniel Amos. Fueled by the songwriting genius and inimitable voice of Terry Scott Taylor, the twin guitar attack of Jerry Chamberlain and Greg Flesch, the rock-solid drumming of Ed McTaggart and the low end… and high harmonies of new bassist Paul Averitt, Daniel Amos is making music that is just as fresh and vital as the their glory years. Sure, on this new tour they will reach back into their storied past for the nuggets and the “shoulda been” hits, but rest assured they will be playing 21st century music right up there with the likes of Radiohead, Wilco and Flaming Lips.

Daniel Amos hasn’t toured in more than ten years, but the upcoming summer tour of 2011 is a rare chance to experience not only the great music but also the onstage spectacle of one of the truly great bands, still in their prime after 35 years.

No matter how many times humanity does this it is amazing. My father spent most of his career with NASA and so we grew up watching and rooting for space flight. I have to say that as I have gotten older I have questioned the ethics of the amount of money we spend on such research (thinking that was spurred in no little part by this song from Adam Again: Inner-City Blues and which I have written about before). Sadly, I do not think this administrations termination of the Constellation program and other projects has been done with the intent of moving funds to other more worthy projects or of reducing our deficit (BTW, when do we get to operate our annual budget with 40% being on debt?).

So today was the last day for Endeavor and just one more shuttle launch to go.

I have been thinking about the future of Jerusalem as part of a project for my class on leadership and critical thinking. I will share that another time, but I came across this video on Wired.com.

Working out their own variation on the politically charged sci-fi subgenre pioneered by District 9, filmmakers David Gidali and Itay Gross inject a dark dose of civilian paranoia into an Israeli setting with their striking new short film, Secular Quarter #3.

Juiced up by UFOs, the visual-effects-rich clip (embedded above) pictures an alien intervention that takes place in a slightly futuristic Jerusalem ridden with walls and dome-shaped cages.

Avatar producer Jon Landau and other judges at the Jerusalem 2111 International Animation Competition awarded the festival’s $10,000 first prize to Secular Quarter #3 director Gidali and cinematographer Gross for doing the best job of creating an “urban sci-fi vision of the city of Jerusalem” as it might look a century from now.

You can see other entries from the competition at Wired.com.

It is produced by the Department of Theology and Religious Studies aided by a journalist with a brilliant first name, Brady Haran. Below is their summary of the Book of Ruth. Not bad really. Alison Milbank‘s summary of the rabbinic interpretation is necessarily curt, but is not far off, “The rabbis read it as a book about steadfast loving kindness.”
