Isidore of Seville

Born: c.560 in Cartagena, Spain
Died: April 4, 636
Canonized:
Feast Day: April 4
Patron Saint of: computers, computer users, computer programmers, Internet

So, how does Saint Isidore of Seville become the patron saint for the Internet? The Observation Service for Internet, who drew it’s mission from the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, researched the Internet and related technologies to select a patron saint that best reflects the concerns and ideals of computer designers, programmers and users. The saint chosen by the Observation Service for Internet was Saint Isidore. “The saint who wrote the well-known ‘Etymologies’ (a type of dictionary), gave his work a structure akin to that of the database. He began a system of thought known today as ‘flashes;’ it is very modern, notwithstanding the fact it was discovered in the sixth century. Saint Isidore accomplished his work with great coherence: it is complete and its features are complementary in themselves.

MarsEdit 2.1 with saving drafts to server

I have and use MarsEdit for my blogging and I have to say it is a great tool. The new upgrade looks gorgeous and lets you save drafts on the server, which is great for starting posts on one machine and finishing them on another.

Well worth checking out.

The MacBook Air

Wow! I mean, wow! I am not sure if I would/will get it (I do use that optical drive a fair amount) but this is a gorgeous sub-notebook. The ad at Apple.com is certainly worth watching. Better yet, go to the Guided Tour. (The list factor is beginning to increase…)

The MacBook Air – Engadget

Apple just announced the .16-inch thin MacBook Air — a laptop so thin it fits in a manila envelope. The new machine features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight, and the new larger trackpad supports multi-touch gestures. Just like the iPhone, you’ll be able to pan around, pinch to zoom, and rotate with two fingers, and move windows with a flick. Apple got the size down by using the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive that’s in the iPod classic, but you’ll be able to order a 64GB SSD as an option. The Air eschews optical media, but there’s a separate external you can snag for $99 and Apple’s also announced a feature called Remote Disk that’ll let the Air get data off the optical drive in any PC or Mac running the Remote Disk software. Pricing starts at $1799, and the Air will be shipping in two weeks.

Newsgator turns NetNewsWire free for everyone

I will say that I paid for the newsreader months ago and do not regret it. I don’t know what the Windows client is like, but the Mac version is great, so grab it now!

Newsgator turns NetNewsWire free for everyone

Wow. I don’t know who hadn’t bought NetNewsWire yet, but if you haven’t, consider your wait vindicated: most of Newsgator’s products, including NNW, Newsgator Online, and FeedDemon (the Windows version of the popular RSS reader) have all gone free with version 3.1.

Brent Simmons, NNW’s creator, is reportedly happy about the change, to say the least, and Newsgator isn’t any less thrilled themselves– they say that not only are they excited to spread the love around to everyone, but that they’ll also be using “attention data” collected from the software (which hopefully sounds more ominous than it is… right?) to “deliver a better experience for everyone.” Not so happy might be the folks who’ve paid for the products in the past– Newsgator is offering an automatic refund to anyone who purchased them in the past 30 days, but anyone before that just has to live with the fact that they paid $30 to use the software at the time (not that it was a bad deal back then anyway). Those who subscribed to the Newsgator Online service will run out their current subscriptions, and then continue on without charge.

Version 3.1 of NetNewsWire features an updated interface with new toolbar icons, some performance and memory enhancements, and the ability to archive news items as HTML files, viewable in any browser. It is now available, for a completely free download, over on Newsgator’s site.

Wii got it!

(Thanks to Matt for the better blog post title).

We Got Wii

My in-laws are in town this weekend for an early Christmas and came bearing not just gifts but THE gift. A Wii. My daughter, as you can see, is a bit excited. And so am I. :-) Bowling is quite fun, but I found it tough to hit the baseball. Clearly I need more practice. So, if you don’t hear from me for a while, you know what I am doing. (BTW, the picture was not staged. This was her genuine and immediate reaction.)
