In reference to another comment, I wrote a long piece some years ago about how this series was superior character-wise to the Potter books. A lot of my opinion, I recall, was due to that book alone and how systemically Taran's character is constructed and reflected in the characters around him. I totally agree that Tarna Wanderer had the biggest impact on me. Character development! (One of the flaws that I noticed from the little I read of the Potter series). I read them to my (now) wife when we were in college and we both bawled through many passages. I keep waiting for someone to pick up the rights for a live action series of movies, but fear that they wouldn't live up to my hopes. Lloyd Alexander has many other excellent books; one of the best would be The Iron Ring. Prydian were some of my favorite books as well.
