June, 2008:

Ed Cook moving to CUA!

Congratulations to Ed Cook on his new position! I am very selfishly glad for his move since he will now be within a reasonable 4 hour drive. I cannot wait to meet up and talk shop from ECUSA to Targum. For those who do not know, Ed has labored hard in the fields, is of course one of the finest Aramaists in the bizz, and is now coming to take up a very prestigious and well-earned position at Catholic University of America.1

Congratulations Ed and see you soon for a drink and a chat!

  1. Vacated, I should note, by another friend and man I admire immensely, Doug Gropp. Doug lent me his copy of Cross and Freedman’s Early Hebrew Orthography: A Study of the Epigraphic Evidence when I was an undergraduate with asperations. []

New “church within a church” within the Anglican Communion

http://pages.prodigy.net/pizzabagel/_images/CR_Anglican_Communion.gifThe new Jerusalem council (not to be confused with the New Jerusalem Council which has yet to be scheduled) has apparently resulted in a new organization of orthodox Anglican churches within the Communion. From the Daily Telegraph:

Orthodox Anglicans who are creating a new movement at a breakaway summit in Jerusalem have said they feel “betrayal and abandonment” at the current church structure.

The 1,000 conservatives at the Gafcon conference say they feel “profound sadness” that the worldwide Anglican Communion has been driven to the brink of schism by liberals in America and Canada departing from traditional church teaching, particularly over sexuality.

Another Daily Telegraph article has more details:

Organisers of the Gafcon summit in Jerusalem who produced a statement declaring the formation of the “church within a church” were keen to state that it does not represent a complete split or schism in Anglicanism, and that they only want to preserve the faith’s original intentions.

Their final statement stated: “We cherish our Anglican heritage and the Anglican Communion and have no intention of departing from it.”…

And they claimed that the “colonial structure” of Anglicanism had failed to discipline those churches which had broken the rules by consecrating gay clergy and blessing same-sex unions.

For good or for ill I think this is the only way for the Anglican Communion to preserve its unity. The comment about the “colonial structure” is spot on, the churches (national entities) that exist now are purely the result of national and political boundaries and the spread of the Anglican Church was the result of British colonization. The Empire is long since gone and now the colonists are taking the lead. With the ability to communication immediately through the internet and phone services the need for physical, regional boundaries is no longer necessary.

We pride ourselves on being a “broad” church with room for everyone in it. If we want the Communion to remain as just that, a communion of different communities and views, then allowing organization based upon theological affiliations rather than geographic location is the best way forward. The problem will be, of course, the fragmenting of the British, Canadian, and US churches as some parishes would choose to leave the local Diocese and others would remain.

For those in other Protestant traditions this is nothing new. What has set the Anglican Communion apart is the episcopal structure, resulting from the origins of the Church of England as a theological rather than structural break from Rome. But the Archbishop of Canterbury (nor the other Primates) is unable to allow diversity while still reserving the power to discipline those who step too far out of bounds. So instead there is diversity with no discipline. Allowing the formation and alignment of Anglican Churches along something other than geographic boundaries might allow for diversity of views and practices while preserving the Communion. Maybe.

Buy n Large

I saw WALL•E with my son yesterday evening (we had a boys weekend since the girls were in NYC watching ballet with Grandmommy). I may comment further on it later, but a couple of points. WALL•E boots up to the sound of a Macintosh chime. The Apple connections are always aplenty. (BTW, in one of the first scenes as WALL•E cleans up keep your eyes peeled for a vehicle from another Pixar film.)

Buy n Large, the company responsible for polluting and evacuating earth, as well as creating all of the robots, cups, clothes, etc. that are in the movie has their own website. You could easily spend a LOT of time poking around that site. I am personally eager for WEND•E the washing bot, but the regenerative liver technology is a must-have for many, especially in Hollywood. There are many more worthwhile moments of humor on the site. For example, their small print says in part:

Any information that is submitted to Buy n Large via its website or other online properties becomes the sole property of the Buy n Large corporation and may be used in any way the Buy n Large corporation deems advantageous. This includes, but is not limited to, selling and leasing customer information.

Their “Privacy Policy ” is even better. It begins

WALL•E contains a good amount of social commentary (Al Gore is on Apple’s board, after all) about our consumption habits and treatment of the earth. It is more heavy handed than in most Pixar films. In fact, I am not sure I can remember any of their movies that had any sort of agenda. Even so, it was a very amusing and enjoyable film. The characters of WALL•E, EVE, and the Captain are excellent and fun. I think it is worth seeing in the theatre, but you will not miss much if you wait for it on DVD.

The harder question posed by a student, is it better than Kung Fu Panda? I am not sure. I think KFP was a more enjoyable experience over all. WALL•E’s story line seems somewhat thin in comparison. The animation, however, remains impeccable with Pixar. The even mix in live footage of human actors that seems completely natural in context.

My final verdict: It is not anywhere near The Incredibles or Monsters, Inc. but it is on par with Cars. I will buyt it on DVD and going back on Sunday to see it with the ladies of the house.

Mississippi Squirrel Revival

Maybe all we need is a few squirrels. I have spent many a pleasant day in Pascagoula and seen many a squirrel there as well. Perhaps some truly are sent from God.
