Andrew Sullivan has taken to using the term “Christianist” (like “creationist” one assumes). What does it mean? What does he mean by it? Even Wikipedia doesn’t have an entry for the term! (Other than a link to the article on Sullivan.)
Ah! Answering my own question by actually searching Sullivan’s website. (I know, what a genius am I?) He explains it here.
Yes. I mean by it the complete conflation of Christian faith and secular politics of the hard right. I don’t see why I should concede my faith or my politics to those who share neither.
So he doesn’t concede his faith or politics by creating a new label and category in which to put other people?
The key to the etymology of his term is “Christian” plus “extremist.” Rhymes with “Islamist.”
